Dr Arabella Simpkin Begin is a Fellow and Director of Clinical Medicine at Lincoln College, Oxford University. She is an Oxford and Harvard-trained physician and academic who has held faculty and leadership roles at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Imperial College, London.
For over two decades, Arabella has investigated how humans respond to uncertainty, and how those responses shape health, decision-making, behaviour, performance, and wellbeing—in high-stakes environments and everyday life.
We are living through an era of unprecedented complexity and change. Conventional wisdom tells us that success comes from reducing uncertainty wherever possible. Arabella’s work asks a different question: what if our greatest opportunities for growth, innovation, and human flourishing lie not in eliminating uncertainty, but in learning how to leverage it?
With a DPhil from Oxford examining burnout through the lens of uncertainty, and a Masters in Medical Education from Harvard Medical School, her research sits at the intersection of neuroscience, behavioural science, leadership, and human performance.
Arabella’s work spans clinical medicine, high-stakes industries, and global systems, examining how professionals operating at the edge of the unknown from healthcare and aviation to business, sport, the arts, and beyond. Arabella has led curriculum reform in major academic institutions helping to prepare clinicians for the unpredictable realities of modern clinical practice.
Arabella is widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals and is regarded internationally as a leading voice on uncertainty. Through her research, writing, speaking, and advisory work, she helps individuals, teams, and organisations develop more adaptive and effective responses to uncertainty improving decision-making, performance, resilience, and wellbeing.
Raised in London and with deep personal and professional roots across the UK, US, and Australia, Arabella lives in Oxford with her American-Australian husband and their three young children.
